River, River, You’re So Fun

For my birthday I wished for a family river rafting trip.

That summer my parents surprised us with an overnight river vacation.

There was a huge yellow truck that brought all our rafts to the river.

The first thing we did was put on our life jackets and helmets. It’s important to be safe.

Everyone was so excited to push off from the riverbank and paddle down the river.

There were even whitewater kayaks floating with us. They go so fast over the waves.

Dad steered the boat and we helped him with our oars. We almost got stuck on a rock.

There was a deer with big antlers at the river’s edge. It was the first deer I’ve ever seen.

And playful beavers building their dam on a side channel.

In the afternoon we took a break and went swimming. The water was so refreshing.

Mom dove under the water and swam with the fish. She said fish nibbled at her toes.

Later, we tied the rafts to rocks along the shore so they wouldn’t float away.

And we went for a long hike on a trail through the trees and along the river.

That night we had a campfire and told stories. Everyone was so happy.

It was easy to fall asleep with the sound of the river passing by. It was such a fun day!

The next morning we were all so excited to play in the river again.

But first we had to eat breakfast. I was really hungry.

Dad wanted to go fishing before we started down the river.

But we yelled to the fish to swim away. They’re so colorful and nice.

In some places the river was steep and the water rushed past the boulders.

And a really brave kayaker went off of a waterfall and didn’t even get hurt.

I was a little sad when our trip ended and we drove back home.

For my birthday next year I’ll wish for another trip down a desert canyon river.
